Your arrival checklist, with real dates
The deadlines in Japan are counted from the day you move into your home, not the day you land. Enter both and this works out every date for you.

Leave blank if it is the same day you land.
Enter the day you land to see your dates.
Collect your residence card at the airport
Issued on entry at major airports for medium and long-term stays. The address on the back is blank at this point.
Ask for work permission, if you are a student
Far easier to obtain at the airport than afterwards. Ask even if you are not sure you will work.
Be online, and get cash
Install a travel eSIM before you fly. Card acceptance is wide but the exceptions cluster around your first day.
Legal deadlineRegister your address — deadline
Counted from the day you move in, not the day you land. This one step unlocks the bank, insurance and phone contract.
Enrol in health insurance, in the same visit
Same building, usually a nearby counter. Premiums are charged from when you became eligible, so delay saves nothing.
Get a Japanese phone number
A prepaid voice SIM is enough. Bank application forms need a contactable Japanese number.
Open a bank account
Possible once your address is on the card and you have a Japanese number. Ask whether it accepts incoming international transfers.
Sort longer-term housing, if you are in temporary accommodation
Compare the twelve-month total, not the monthly rent. Upfront costs and furniture are where the money goes.
Set up how you send money home
Compare what arrives in the recipient account, not the advertised fee. Measure it once and reuse the result.
